Cancer is one of the most feared diseases of 21st century. Research states that about one in five individuals will form some form of malignant cancer at some time in their lifetime.

Each day, in every individual malignant cells form and circulate. In a fit person these cells are killed by body`s healthy immune system, but for an individual with cancer, body’s capability to Fight with these cells fails. Malignant cell then start to reproduce and multiply out of control or attack other tissues triggering the illness “CANCER”.

Ayurveda and Cancer

Ancient manuscripts have several references to cancer. “Arbudha” is the most precise terminology for cancer. “Granthi” was the terminology often used for a non-malignant tumour. It describes cancer as an inflammatory and non-inflammatory swelling.

As per Ayurveda, cancer starts due to unbalanced metabolism and imbalance of body constituents causing defective division of cells and improper growth which leads to the reduction of the vibrant energy.
Ayurveda follows indicative anti-cancerous treatment through correction of metabolic imbalance and in some cases by herbalmedicine for immunity.

Traditional ayurvedic physicians used to detect cancer even at initial stages by knowing the preliminary signs & symptoms and also the body’s imbalance. Treatment varies and depends on the nature of the patient, state or the stage of disease and the mental strength of the individual.

Then the herbs like hellebores, guduchi, kusta, arjuna, bilwa are administered for local application on the benign tumour. The tumours mature and at times get removed by it or by invasive means. Cauterization, leech therapy, alkaline healing were also performed based on the nature of tumour and the area of occurrence. Wound is then cleaned with herbs which initiates healing by herbalmedicine for cancer.

Traditional way of treating malignant tumour

When herbal medication fails or in advanced phases surgical or invasive action was followed. Primarily instigating and cleansing was done, then posterior application of warm herbs to dissolve the contents of swelling.  Surgery was then executed by opening the malignant tumour to remove the contents and clear from its origin. Additionally, cauterization is done to avoid the relapse of the tumour. Wound is then stitched & plastered with remedial herbs. Appropriate post-operative care is given for healing.
